SMOKED TROUT DIP

One of our favorite restaurants while living in Newport Beach was a local hang-out called “Gulfstream”, where they served a version of this trout dip along side a bunch of humble saltines and a bottle of Siracha Chili Sauce. We ordered it almost every time.

Through the years-and multiple tastings-I’ve attempted to recreate something as close as possible to this go-to appetizer. It’s a perfect little bite to accompany any dinner party or special occasion, and it’s always a big hit!

Smoked Trout Dip

Prep Time 30 minutes
Course Appetizer, Snack
Cuisine American
Servings 6

Ingredients

  • 3 Ounces Smoked Trout Canned with oil drained, or Freshly Smoked
  • 1 Celery Stalks, (plus leaves if available) Finely Chopped
  • 1 Scallion Finely Chopped
  • 1 Chopped Hard Boiled Egg Optional
  • 1 Zest of One Lemon
  • 2 Tbsps Lemon Juice (fresh)
  • 3-4 Tbsps Sour Cream or Light Sour Cream
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Saltine Crackers To Serve
  • Siracha Chili Sauce To Serve

Instructions

  • Drain Smoked Trout and place in a bowl
  • Add Chopped Celery, Scallion, Hard Boiled Egg (if using), Lemon Zest and Lemon Juice
  • Add Sour Cream and lightly mix
(Start with 2 Tbsp, mix, and add 1 Tbsp at a time after that. If you like it more creamy, add more. If you like less, adding 1 at a time will allow you taste along the way, and make it to your preference.)
  • Add Salt and Pepper to taste. (Add at the end, as different brands of Smoked Trout will have different levels of saltiness, so you will want to adjust.)
  • Serve with Saltine Crackers, Your Favorite Vegetables, and Siracha Chili Sauce

Notes

1. Smoked Trout
-I used the canned smoked trout from Trader Joe’s.  I’ve seen other brands in other grocers, so you can give them a try as well.
-You can also find freshly smoked trout at the fish counter or at the deli in some grocers
-If you have a smoker and like to smoke your own meats, this would be a great opportunity to smoke some trout.
2. Your favorite vegetables are also good options for serving. Some of our favorites are: Sliced Cucumber, Celery Stalks, Endive, & Sliced Bell Pepper.
3. The photo shown is a double recipe, and does not include the hard boiled egg. Including the egg helps to expand the volume and add additional servings.
4. Leftovers make a great lunch over a piece of toast or veggies!
